When speech becomes harder, communication should stay possible

AAC communication, made faster.

Build a message from symbols or text and speak it clearly. AbilityMic works offline and adapts to everyday communication needs.

  • 5,400+ symbols
  • Works without internet
  • No ads or tracking
AbilityMic on iPad: a colour-coded symbol board with a message bar and a Speak sentence button
See it in action

Three tiles. One clear sentence.

oucharmI need some help

“My arm hurts. I need help.”

Three tiles from the CommuniKate 2.0 board shown below — Personal Care → Health, → Body Parts — spoken aloud so the person listening can act immediately.

AbilityMic Health board: tiles for ouch, headache, chest pain, back pain, earache, toothache, sick, itch, stomach ache, a sore throat and cramp
Health — where ouch comes from.
AbilityMic Body Parts board: tiles for body, hand, head, finger, chest, ear, face, back, nose, arm, foot, eye, stomach, neck and leg
Body Parts — where arm comes from.
AbilityMic on Mac: the tiles hello, I, want, go and yes have been tapped into the message bar, and a suggestion chip offers the sentence “Hello, I want to go.”
The real thing: tapped tiles land in the message bar, the suggestion chip turns them into a full sentence, and Speak sentence says it out loud.

Optional AI shapes the phrasing when that saves effort. Without it, AbilityMic speaks exactly what was selected — offline, every time.

In daily use

Built around the day, not around a demo.

On the floor, at the table, in the car — the board goes where the conversation happens. Large tiles, predictable layout, and speech output that works with no network at all.

  • Tiles sized for imprecise touch
  • The same board on iPhone, iPad and Mac
  • Boards updated remotely by a therapist or parent
Why AbilityMic

Less effort between a need and being understood.

Communicate faster

Turn a few selections into a clear spoken message instead of building every sentence from scratch.

Works offline

Boards, symbols and speech output stay available without internet — at school, in the car, in hospital.

Make it personal

Adapt vocabulary, boards and access methods to the user, and change them as needs change.

Product

Everything the setup needs, in one app.

Optional AI shapes sentences and generates symbols or whole boards — on device where possible, online only with consent. See how the two modes differ.

AbilityMic on iPhone: the tiles hello, I and want are in the message bar and a suggestion offers the sentence “Hello, I want to know something.”
The same board on iPhone. Folders group vocabulary by topic, colours follow the Modified Fitzgerald Key, and the suggestion row builds a full sentence from the tiles tapped so far.
Apple Intelligence + optional cloud AI

Natural sentences, with a clear choice between offline and online.

AbilityMic starts with communication on the device. Compatible Apple devices can shape a few selected words into a complete sentence with Apple Intelligence. Online AI adds broader generation only when the user turns it on.

Selected on the AAC board
wantcocoaplease
On device · Apple Intelligence

“I would like some cocoa, please.”

The sentence can be suggested and spoken without sending the selected words to an external AI server.

No internet requiredOnce Apple Intelligence is enabled and its on-device model is ready.
Private by designSentence processing stays on the compatible Apple device.
Communication still worksThe AAC board and Apple text-to-speech do not depend on AI.
A broader request

“Create a morning routine board with breakfast, medicine and getting dressed.”

Online · after consent

A ready-to-review board draft with matching vocabulary and symbols.

Cloud AI helps with longer assistant tasks, board drafts and custom symbol generation. The result is reviewed before it becomes part of the board.

Explicit opt-inThe app explains what leaves the device before online AI is enabled.
More generative toolsAssistant help, board drafts, custom symbols and optional premium voices.
Easy to turn offCore AAC, local boards and on-device speech remain available.

No false trade-off: offline mode protects the essential communication path; online AI is an optional layer for tasks where broader generation is useful. Availability of on-device Apple Intelligence depends on a compatible device, supported OS and language.

HomeKit automation

Turn on a light from the same board you use to speak.

A communication tile can carry a real HomeKit action. One tap writes the new power state to a light or plug — with no need to open another app.

  • Native Apple HomeKit
  • iPhone and iPad
  • On, off and toggle actions
Interactive recreation of the app flow

One accessible tile. One HomeKit action.

Try the tile below. This browser demonstration mirrors the real AbilityMic workflow; the installed app sends the action to HomeKit on a physical iPhone or iPad.

Ready. The HomeKit accessory is reachable.

  1. 1Tap the AAC tile
  2. 2AbilityMic sends the action
  3. 3HomeKit confirms the state

What is implemented: AbilityMic reads the user’s HomeKit homes and reachable power accessories, then performs on, off or toggle actions after Apple’s system permission is granted. If an accessory is offline, communication remains available.

AbilityMic Privacy Center: processing source set to ‘online after consent’, with controls for consents, therapist notes, sentence history, recordings, offline boards and PDF exports
The Privacy Center in the app — consents, sentence history, recordings and exports are all reviewable and clearable by the user.
  • Offline-first core — communication does not stop when connectivity does.
  • Optional AI, never mandatory — the user chooses the level of assistance.
  • Privacy by design — minimal data handling and clear user control.
  • Accessible by default — WCAG 2.2 AA, VoiceOver, switch scanning, large targets.
  • Not a medical device — AbilityMic supports everyday communication. It does not replace assessment, therapy or an individual AAC plan, and its statistics are descriptive only.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Does AbilityMic require internet access?

No. The core app is designed to work offline. AI-supported phrasing is optional and may require connectivity.

Do I need the subscription?

No. The app works without a subscription. The monthly plan is only for optional AI support.

What platforms does AbilityMic support?

iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro on the App Store as a Universal Purchase, plus a browser version at abilitymic.com/app for paid accounts. Android is in Google Play testing; Windows is planned.

Can AbilityMic be customized?

Yes. Boards, vocabulary, colours, profiles and access methods can be adjusted to the user’s needs and habits over time.

How do therapists and families manage boards remotely?

Through the web panel at abilitymic.com/app. Sign in from any browser to build and update boards, sync changes to the user’s device, and review descriptive usage patterns — without physical access to the device.

How does the AI work, and is it private?

Optional AI turns a few symbol taps into a natural sentence and can generate custom symbols and boards. On compatible Apple devices with Apple Intelligence enabled, sentence support runs on-device. Cloud AI is used only with explicit consent, and core communication always works without it.

Can AbilityMic control smart home devices?

Yes. On iPhone and iPad, AbilityMic integrates with Apple HomeKit, so reachable lights, plugs and other power accessories can be switched directly from the communication board, with multi-home support. If devices are unavailable, communication keeps working normally.

Is AbilityMic a medical device?

No. AbilityMic is a consumer AAC communication tool. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, monitor health conditions or make clinical decisions, and its statistics are descriptive only.
